Ladies – Interested In Badminton? – We Need You!

Oakbrook are actively seekly new members this year, with a particular emphasis on ladies who would like to play in matches.

Please contact Dawn or Simon (see our contact us link) for more info or join us during summer for a no-obligation summer season of badminton!

AGM News

Thank you to those who turned up for the AGM last night and also to Fulwood Sports Club for letting us use their pavilion and providing us with refreshments from the bar.

Minutes are currently being typed and will be emailed as soon as Simon’s fingers allow!

Summer Badminton

Summer badminton will run on Tuesdays starting on the 22nd May from 7.45pm to 9.45pm. We will have two or three courts each night; depending on numbers. There won’t be a session on 5th June due to the public holiday. The cost is £25 for summer membership (14 nights); payable in advance. If you wish to “pay and play” there will be a fee of £3 on the night.

The summer club will also be open to other club members and those not already in a club. It’s always good to pit your wits against new opposition! Please contact Dawn on 07944 185237 or email for more information.

AGM 15th May 2012

Our AGM is on Tuesday 15th May 2012, starting at 7.30pm.

I have booked Fulwood Sports (Tennis) Club pavilion again, where we will be able to use their pavilion and buy drinks from the bar at cost price!

Please let me know if there is anything you would like on the agenda, and also whether or not you think you can make it.

I don’t think it should be too long this year as we don’t have many big decisions to make so please do come – the club would not exist if it weren’t for those who support it – both with their attendance and fees but also with their help in running it!

Badminton Shirts

Our shirts have been ‘designed’… and emails sent out to ask for your preferences.  Our name will be printed on the back and the logo embroidered on the front.  I’ll bring down the samples to club night for the next couple of weeks and then I’ll need deposits so that we can place the order!  If you haven’t replied to the email, please do so as soon as possible!

Oakbrook 2 V Wisewood 2

Final score 4-5.  Players: Dave W. Andrew B. Hyung-Joo L. Charlotte W. Linda M. Dawn P. (C)

A good game played by the combined team – and a big thank you to Hyung Joo and Andrew for standing in for Chris and Willie.  It was a close call and all games were played with a positive and fair attitude.

Well done Wisewood 2 for pipping us at the post in the final game and securing a win!

Oakbrook Combined 2 V Ranmoor 2

Final Score 5-4 to Oakbrook

3.1.12 – The first match back after the Christmas Break and boy we knew it!

We got off to a flying start with Chris and Dave winning their rubber in 2 and Charlotte and Linda winning their ladies in 3 (despite a confusion at the end with the scores…) – phew!  Unfortunately Charlotte and Dawn managed to lose their ladies in 3 (we are blaming the cookies and meatballs – I’ll say no more!) and Andrew and Dave lost theirs.  There we found ourselves at 2 – 2 and everything to play for.  The games continued and we found ourselves at 4-4 and the last game on court was Andrew and Dawn’s   They lost the first match by quite a few points, then changed their game plan and managed to win the second.  With everything to play for (fortunately they didn’t know they were playing the decider!) the game was close all the way through but eventually they won the final end 21-17.

A great match, with good sportsmanship from both teams and we look forward to the re-match when hopefully we’ll all be feeling a little fitter and a little less full of mince pies and christmas cake!

Combined Plastics 2 V Wisewood 1

Ladies: Charlotte, Linda, Dawn

Men: Dave, David, Willie

Results 5-4

The team all arrived at Wisewood nice and early, at the promise of having 3 courts, but with a little trepidation at playing Wisewood 1, since we’d lost to Wisewood 2 (6-3) earlier in the season.

The first 3 games we played set us up for a nice early lead.  Charlotte and Linda won their ladies, Dave and David (standing in for Chris) won their mens and Dawn and Willie won their mixed.  Buzzing from our success we all went on again – only to lose the next 3 rubbers (2 of which went to 3 and were very close).  From our great start, we found ourselves at a score of 3-3 with our last 3 rubbers (all mixed) to play.

Charlotte and Dave fought hard in their first game, and had a close win of 23-21.  In the second end they’d found their stride and won easily with a final score of 21-13.

David and Linda went on to play at the same time as Willie and Dawn – in the knowledge that the score was 4-3 and there was everything to play for.  When Willie and Dawn lost in 2 close games, it was down to David and Linda to save the day.  David confessed to ‘usually bottling it’ when such a demand was on him and at one game each things were on a knife edge! Despite these worries, they played magnificently in the final game and succeeded in securing the team a win with an overall score of 5-4!

Thank you to all for turning up early and playing hard, and to David for standing in at short notice.

Abbeydale 4 V Combined 2 – Match Report

The Combined 2 team played away at Abbeydale on 17th October 2011.

Our team consisted of Dave, Chris and Willie and Charlotte, Linda and Dawn (c)

All the rubbers were really close – with 4 out of the 9 going to 3 games.

At the end of the 8th game, we found ourselves in the situation that no-one wants to be in….. the last game (with everyone watching) was going to be the decider…… heads down after we lost the first game 21-17… picked them up again when we won the next game 21-17…. and the final score… 21-7 to us.

Overall score – we won 5 – 4!

The partnerships started to fall into place and it was nice to see them starting to gel and work together on court, well done everyone!
